Manchester United completed the signing of Spanish international goalkeeper Ricardo Lopez Felipe from Real Valladolid in a deal worth £1.5m on 30 August, 2002.

Ricardo is an experienced keeper having played for Athletico Madrid during the nineties and retained a permanent spot in Spain's international set-up throughout his career. Despite being second choice for the Spanish national side, his chances of holding down the number one jersey for his country were limited by playing at a club - such as his previous club Real Valladolid - that is considered small.

The Madrid-born goalkeeper is of a similar stock to Fabien Barthez, in that he likes to use his feet. But when it comes to using his hands, Ricardo has proved he is a world-class shot-stopper.
